Name: Kate Carmain

TAC Project Name: Rosebud Reads Literacy

Number Impacted: 700

Tell us about your Take Action Challenge. Why did you start this project, what impact did you want to make?

My aim for my TAC was to spread literacy among children and promote a love of reading. A large part of my goal is to increase literacy rates among Rosebud Sioux children, but I have not been able to go to the Reservation yet as it is in South Dakota. Please consider donating to my gofundme: https://www.gofundme.com/funds-for-rosebud-reads-literacy.

What did you accomplish?

I was made new work and business connections from this project and I was able to put on a book fair that gave away 700 books and 700 book bags! Every kid who came to the book fair got to take home two free books, a book bag, and they were able to do a fun, literacy based activity. The kids I impacted were underprivileged kids and I was able to provide them with good books that they got to pick out on their own. I have also been volunteering every Tuesday at the Barbara Bush Literary Foundation. I help plan galas and send invitations. I do a lot of administrative work there and I got to meet Neil Bush.

How did you overcome obstacles?

Because I haven’t been able to go to the reservation yet I had to brainstorm different ideas of how I could be involved in literacy in my local community. I came up with the idea of having a book fair at a local elementary school so I emailed a librarian who donated 700 books to me and we worked together for four months to plan this event and getting volunteers.
