Corrie MacLaggan

Topic: Media Literacy

Corrie MacLaggan is The Texas Tribune’s managing editor. Previously, the Austin native worked as a national correspondent for Reuters, writing and editing stories about Texas and nearby states and overseeing a network of freelance writers. Corrie is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she studied journalism and Spanish.

December Monthly Meeting

Dr. Jo Meier-Marquis, PhD
Meeting: December 2, 5 – 7 PM
Topic: Healthy Relationships

Dr. Jo Meier-Marquis’ research activities focus on parenting relationships, health psychology and outcome evaluations of community outreach programs, altruism, and helping behavior. She can speak on social psychology, statistical analysis and experimental health.


Dr. Pauline Quimson Miller
Meeting: February 3, 5 – 7 PM
Topic: Mindfulness

Dr. Pauline is an MD and psychologist with a specialization in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Her practice is to empower clients to integrate spirit, mind, emotions, and physical body.

Microsoft Workshops

Creating connections with Dear Evan Hansen

When: Wednesday, January 6, 2021
Where: Microsoft Teams Meeting

Microsoft Store and the Tony award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen are partnering to provide a free, virtual one-hour workshop for students who want to authentically connect to themselves, friends, family, and their communities during this time of social distancing.

Dear Evan Hansen has received critical acclaim and has inspired conversation about mental health and the perils of living in a society hyper connected by social media, which can often feel lonely. Workshop participants will define what it means to make authentic connections and explore ways to create those connections. Students choose how they want to connect and will use Microsoft tools to research and create an actionable plan for reaching out.

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Define what making a connection means to them.
  • Demonstrate turning goals into a clear and meaningful action plan.
  • Use key applications such as PowerPoint to research, create, and prepare to share their action plan.


Learn to Design and Code Apps

When: Thursday, Feb 18, 2021 5pm – 6pm (CST)
Where: Microsoft Teams Meeting

In this free two-hour virtual workshop, students will learn about apps and how to create them. They will brainstorm their own app idea and learn to code an app with Code.org’s App Lab.

By the end of this workshop, participants will have:

  • Understood what apps are and how coding relates to creating them.
  • Learned coding fundamentals in JavaScript using block-based coding.
  • Learned basic app design skills.

Virtual Road Trip with Bing

When: Tuesday, March 16, 2021 5pm – 6:30pm (CDT)
Where: Microsoft Teams Meeting

Plan your perfect American road trip! During this free virtual workshop, students will choose three national parks or monuments to explore in Bing maps and then put together an exciting PowerPoint presentation showcasing their virtual road trip.

At the end of the workshop students will have:

  • Mapped a 3-stop, road trip of United States national parks and monuments.
  • Virtually explored their chosen parks and monuments, gathering photos along the way.
  • Found facts and history about their chosen parks and monuments.
  • Built a virtual scrapbook of their trip in PowerPoint using the map, facts, and photos they gathered.

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s “Hall of Fossils” Tour

When: Thursday, March 18, 2021
Where: Microsoft Teams Meeting

In this virtual workshop hosted by Microsoft, students learn how to turn their passion into an entrepreneurial business idea. Students get guidance on how to create a business plan and a polished pitch ready to share with others.

By the end of the workshop, students will have:

  • Learned what makes a great product or service idea.
  • Completed a simple business plan.
  • Learned key presentation skills to be able to pitch their business idea.
