Tell us about your Take Action Challenge. Why did you start this project, what impact did you want to make?

After seeing the devastation that Hurricane Harvey left, I wanted my project to help those who were victimized by the floods. I began Project Prom to ensure that inner city school girls who had been affected by Harvey still had an opportunity to feel beautiful on their prom night. I started by reaching out to community members and involving clubs at my school to market the initiative.

What did you accomplish?

In three months, generous community members donated over $5,000 worth in makeup items, dresses, and shoes. On March 23rd, I met with the Spring ISD Prom Drive Coordinator to hand over the donations and she was awestruck by the amount we had collected. This act of service brought me a sense of fulfillment, especially since I was able to help so close to home.

How did you overcome obstacles?

The most difficult aspect of the project was spreading the word and collecting donations within a short time frame. I found that the best way to overcome this obstacle was by involving other community members. I had an amazing group of mentors including Mrs. Ivana, my parents, and my coach Yasmin Rahmat. Before this Take Action Challenge, I never would have believed I could make such an impact on my community. This challenge made me feel more confident and truly taught me what it means to pay it forward.

If you could advice to a future YWLC participant about her Take Action Challenge, what would it be?
